Post-Partum Depression: Warning Signs to Look Out For

When you give birth, chances are you will become a bundle of emotions. This is because there are numerous hormones raging through your body. In addition to this, the process of childbirth can be quite traumatizing to your body. As such, it is not uncommon to develop baby blues. However, what some people do not realise is that postpartum depression could easily be misdiagnosed with baby blues. One thing to note about baby blues is that they only last a few days until your hormones become balanced. If you find that you are still not feeling like yourself, you should watch out for these warning signs that would indicate the onset of postpartum depression.

Constant feelings of worry and anxiety

Worrying about your new baby is normal, especially if you are a first time mother. However, if you begin to notice that you are in a constant state of anxiety about your parenting, the welfare of your baby and other things, then you may be suffering from postpartum depression. If you cannot shake off this feeling of worry, you may want to consider seeing a psychologist.

Wanting to be isolated from everyone

Becoming a mother may make you feel like withdrawing from other people. This is largely due to you psychologically wanting to nest and bond with your baby. As such, it is not uncommon to find new mothers withdrawing from friends and only surrounding themselves with close family. However, if you find that you feel like being isolated from your family and the new baby, then you may be suffering from postpartum depression.

Overwhelming feelings of rage

Being hormonal would make you have minimal patience, and this could result in you snapping at the smallest provocation. Nevertheless, this should not be a regular aspect of your life. If you notice that you are persistently facing overwhelming feelings of rage for family members or your newborn baby, then you may be developing postpartum depression. Counselling would be important as these feeling of rage could have dire consequences down the road of left unchecked. This is especially true if you have a spouse as it could fracture your relationship in the long run.

Suffering from insomnia

Parents of a newborn will typically be sleep deprived, especially in the first few months. However, this usually means they will try to grab as much sleep as they can when the moment presents itself. If you find that you cannot fall asleep when you get a chance to, then you may be suffering from insomnia and this could indicate postpartum depression.
